Save Affordable Housing in California

A few years ago Dina's family was living with 10 other people in a 4-bedroom house. When Dina became a Habitat homeowner, it changed their lives forever. "I asked my kids, 'Why do you have better grades?' They told me, 'We have more peace. We're more happy.'

Combined federal and state cuts have severely depleted needed funding for affordable shelter. In addition to the $1 billion per year for affordable housing that was eliminated along with California redevelopment agencies in 2012, federal cuts meant a loss of $2.5 billion nationwide. The HOMeS Act (Senate Bill 1220) sponsored by Mark DeSaulnier helps orgs like Habitat Greater SF recoup the funding we've lost. SB1220 helps to create a dedicated funding source for affordable housing by levying a modest fee of $75 per real estate document recorded, which in turn helps stabilize our communities and open safe and affordable rental and homeownership opportunities to working families, individuals, disabled persons and seniors of all income levels living in California.
