Daly City - 7555 Mission Street Development
With many local working families still unable to afford a home in the Bay Area, U.S. Congresswoman Jackie Speier commended Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco for helping to fill the housing gap with its newest development at 7555 Mission Street in Daly City, noting that "it's programs like this one that give people more hope."
Speier was among local dignitaries, including Daly City Mayor Mike Guingona, Daly City council members, San Mateo County Supervisor Adrienne Tissier, and other community leaders at the groundbreaking of Habitat Greater San Francisco's largest and most ambitious affordable housing development to date: a four-story, $15 million affordable housing condominium development that will enable 36 hardworking families to realize their dream of homeownership.
The development is a cornerstone of the Grand Boulevard Initiative, exemplifying the revitalization that is underway along El Camino Real to provide compact, urban design and construction in a pedestrian-friendly, transit-oriented corridor. The 7555 Mission Street development also represents a tremendous public/private partnership in affordable ownership housing, made possible in part through financing from voter-approved Proposition 1C, providing nearly $1.76 million, or 10 percent of the overall cost. The City of Daly City has also made affordable housing a top priority, purchasing the land for the homes and providing additional funding for the pre-development construction phase - an investment of more than $5 million. Community support from local corporations, civic organizations, foundations, faith groups and private individuals will make up the remaining funding needed for this development.
Habitat's skilled construction staff will not build it alone. With about 90 percent of the labor needed to build each and every Habitat home coming from volunteers, Habitat expects nearly 200 volunteers to work on the site each week for a total of nearly 60,000 volunteer hours by the time construction is completed in 2012!
