Parkview Development

Whitney Young Circle

Construction of two new Habitat homes in Daly City has begun. The bungalow craftsman-style homes on Parkview Avenue, which have been designed to evoke the look of Cape Cod cottages, are expected to be completed by Spring 2010. Two families have been selected for the homes, joining twelve other Habitat family members already living in Daly City. They will begin their sweat equity immediately along with hundreds of local volunteers and community partners who are expected to participating in the construction of the Parkview homes.

The three-bedroom homes will be GreenPoint Rated through Build it Green, which promotes healthy, resource-efficient building practices in California. Roof-mounted photovoltaic solar panels will be installed, providing a portion of the electricity needed for each residence.

Made possible through the Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) Solar Habitat Program and a grant of $15,000 per home, the solar panels bring renewable energy to families with limited incomes and will provide a savings of more than $500.00 annually for the future owners of the homes.

Green features, including construction waste recycling, ENERGY STAR-rated appliances, and hard surface flooring, will enable lower operating costs and healthier indoor environments for the new homeowners, as well as a lower environmental impact than traditionally constructed homes.

The landscaping plan includes drought tolerant and native landscaping, as well as pervious pavers in the driveway and front walkways, rather than concrete paving, to allow the infiltration of storm water, reduce the impact of run-off, and increase the aesthetic appeal of the development.

Habitat Greater San Francisco partnered with the City of Daly City, which donated the land for the Parkview homes, to ensure achievable homeownership opportunities for working families who want to remain in their city.
