Bay Area Corporate Executives Join Forces To Build Homes
June 15, 2011 - In this time of high unemployment, budget cuts and foreclosures, a select group of the area's leading corporate executives from across the Bay Area, including Accenture, GAP, Oracle, SAP, Wells Fargo, and many others, replaced their laptops and smartphones with hammers, joining forces to build decent, affordable housing for local working families.
The invitation-only, corporate build event - Leaders on Ladders - was held at Habitat's most advanced affordable housing development outside of New York City, where nearly 200 volunteers each week will assist in the construction of a four-story, 36 condominium development, providing new affordable housing opportunities for local working families.
Volunteers play a critical role in the construction process, providing about 90 percent of the labor needed to build the homes, or nearly 120,000 hours of work by the time the development is completed.
The $15 million development represents a tremendous public/private partnership in affordable ownership housing, made possible in part through financing from voter-approved Proposition 1C, providing nearly $1.76 million, as well as an investment of more than $5 million from the City of Daly City, solar paneling from Pacific Gas & Electric through its Solar Habitat Program, and community support from local corporations, civic organizations, foundations, faith groups and private individuals.
