August 1, 2008 - Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco has been awarded a grant of $1.76 million from the State of California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) for a 36-home affordable housing development at 7555 Mission Street in Daly City. Built on a raised podium garage structure, the three-level development will be Habitat Greater San Francisco's largest affordable housing development to date. Currently, the total project budget exceeds $13 million. Habitat Greater San Francisco expects to break ground on Mission Street by summer of 2009.

As one of the only nonprofit providers of ownership housing in San Mateo County for families with low and very low incomes, Habitat Greater San Francisco is pursuing the Daly City development in response to the growing need for affordable infill development near the transit corridor.

Together, Daly City and Habitat Greater San Francisco have agreed to build a podium parking structure that will increase the site's capacity to more than double the number of homes planned under the original design. In addition to the HCD grant, Habitat Greater San Francisco has received the donated land and a significant subsidy from the city of Daly City. This development represents a tremendous public/private partnership that will raise the bar for affordable housing developers and become a model of successful public/private infill development of affordable housing.

The HCD grant is part of the Infill and Infrastructure Grant Program, which provides grants for infrastructure costs related to high-density infill housing and mixed-use development. The program demonstrates HCD's goal to expand safe and affordable housing opportunities, and to promote strong communities in California.
