Home Ownership - San Mateo County

Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco builds houses in partnership with families with very low incomes and sells the houses at no interest to qualified families.

Requirements
Applicants must meet the current requirements:

    Residency

    • Must have lived or worked in San Mateo County consistently for 12 months.

    • Household must have lived together consistently for 12 months.

    • At least one applicant must be a legal U.S. resident or citizen.

    • Preference is given to applicants who reside or work in the city where homes are available.

    First-Time Homebuyer

    • Must not have owned or co-owned real estate in the last three years.

    Credit

    • Applicants must have a credit score of at least 650.

    • Applicants must have consistent on-time credit payments.

    Income

    • Income must meet HUD requirements very-low income in San Mateo County.

      • Less than $40,725 for 2 or less

      • $40,725-$61,080 for a family of 3

      • $61,080-$67,860 for a family of 4

      • $67,860-$73,260 for a family of 5

      • $73,260-$78,720 for a family of 6

      • $78,720-$84,120 for a family of 7

      • More than $84,120 for a family of 8 or more

Applicants are evaluated based on three main criteria:

    Need for Housing

    • Currently living in inadequate housing conditions, which are substandard, overcrowded, unsafe, or are paying rent too high in relation to monthly income.

    Ability to Pay

    • Can demonstrate a history of regular income.

    • Ability to make monthly payments on a no-interest mortgage, property taxes and insurance.

    Willingness to Partner

    • Must fulfill "sweat equity" commitment of contributing 500 hours of volunteer hours towards the mission of Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco most of which is in the construction of the home.

    • Be responsible for the maintenance and repairs of the home from the time of move in.

    • Must be willing to show your support at events for Habitat developments and on occasion speak on behalf of Habitat and homeownership.

Pre-Application
Pre-applications are accepted year-round. Families that fill out a pre-application are entered into our applicant database and will receive information on opportunities for the Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco home ownership program.

Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco is able to provide the application, notices, sales documents and other materials in English. We encourage families from all backgrounds to apply. Habitat assigns all selected families with family support volunteers, and we do our very best to align bi-lingual volunteers with non-English speaking families.
