Habitat Welcomes Volunteers to Daly City Construction Site
February 26, 2011 - Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco's premier construction project, the most advanced Habitat development west of New York City, got into full swing at a special build event welcoming volunteers to the Daly City site and raising the first walls of the condominiums that will become home to 36 local working families.
After the false start of our "Day One" event with corporate volunteers, which was cancelled due to bad weather, the next day marked the official start of volunteers building at 7555 Mission St.
The four-story structure built on a podium garage is Habitat Greater San Francisco's most ambitious development to date and is a cornerstone of the Grand Boulevard Initiative, exemplifying the revitalization that is underway along El Camino Real to provide compact, urban design and construction in a pedestrian-friendly, transit-oriented corridor.
With sunshine and a crisp chill in the air (the much-hyped and anticipated snow flurries were a bust), volunteers from the campus Habitat chapters of Stanford University and UC Berkeley, as well as Calvary Presbyterian Church, St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Valley Presbyterian Church, and others began framing the walls of the homes, some thinking of the future homeowners who will live there one day.
"I'm here because I wanted to be part of a team building homes to give back to the community, especially for some well-deserving families."
Arlene Gonzales
First-Time Volunteer
Nearly 200 volunteers each week will assist in the construction of the development, providing about 90 percent of the labor needed to build the homes, or nearly 120,000 hours of work by the time the development is completed. Special thanks to the many corporate volunteers from across the Bay Area who had planned to join us on "Day One": The City of Daly City, Coldwell Banker, Fairchild Semiconductor, Oracle, PG&E, SAP, Union Bank and Wells Fargo.
